The history of mineral hot springs in North America goes back as long as recorded history. Every one of them share the precise distinction of rendering healing to the inhabitants of the land. They came from far and wide, by foot, horse, wagon, buggy or car to immerse themselves into the waters Nature made to help heal the body.
The prehistoric peoples probably revered Faywood hot springs as a sacred healing place. The presence of circular depressions or mortar holes in the tufa dome suggests early use of the springs by these nomadic hunter-gatherers. Pottery and other artifacts found in the vicinity attests that the villagers from the nearby Mimbres pueblos knew of these warm healing waters, as did the Apaches.
Desert Hot Springs was becoming recognized as the greatest of health centers, as one marvelous recovery in health follows another, carrying out the prognostication of Dr. W. A. Brue, English scientist whose knowledge of mineral healing springs is unsurpassed. He had made an analysis of all the famous Spas in existence and pronounced Desert Hot Springs water the best.
 The hot springs at Breitenbush were created by a combination of volcanism and glaciation thousands of years ago. Native Americans were the first humans to visit the springs. Although the Santiam band of the Kalapuya lived closest, numerous tribes in a radius of hundreds of miles visited the springs to hunt, fish, pick huckleberries, and use the springs for healing and ritual purification.
For years people have gathered at the Lava hot springs to bathe, rest and worship. Many people believe that there are curative properties associated with the hot mineral water and refer to the Springs as "the healing waters" It is rumored that long ago the Springs were neutral ground and shared in peace by all.
For more than a hundred years, hot springs in the Rockies have attracted untold numbers of visitors to their healing waters. There's something very soothing about soaking in a pool of water heated by the primordial heat of the Earth itself – especially at a time when the health of that Earth itself is in question.
Wilbur Hot Springs is a unique place that has attracted followers and captivated them for centuries. Located in Colusa County , about two hours northeast of San Francisco and north of Sacramento, the enduring essence of the place's appeal are the hot mineral springs and their powerful, healing properties.
Native Americans traveling through this valley were the first to discover and make use of these hot springs. They felt the hot mineral water had a strong medicinal effect, healing the body and strengthening the spirit. They called these springs the "Wampum Waters". Wampum translates roughly as "good" or "beneficial."
The beautiful rolling hills of the Central Coast, that we know as El Paso de Robles have always been renowned for thermal springs. The Salinan Indians, the most historical inhabitants of the area, knew this area as the "Springs" and found relief from various ailments in the therapeutic waters.
In the1800's Hot Springs, North Carolina was a famous resort attracting people from all over the country to take the curative waters and enjoy the healthful mountain air.
The medicinal value of the mud baths, which were housed in small buildings surrounding the springs and where one could lounge in complete comfort covered by the slimy, gooey mud, spread far and wide and Lehman Springs became a popular resort under the careful guidance of Mr. Lehman.
In the 1880s, invalids traveled to the Harbin Hot Springs Health and Pleasure Resort by stagecoach. They came to "take the waters" for their dyspepsia, rheumatism or gout.
Generous verandas, period furnishings, and healing waters invite the visitor to experience turn-of-the-century hospitality under the shadow of Emigrant Peak. The Chico hot springs, long appreciated by native peoples, got their commercial start during the territorial period when miners stopped by to bathe and "wash their duds".
Officially discovered in 1859, The Great Pagosa Hot Spring had been used by the Utes and other Native Americans for many years to cure a variety of health problems.
